It took the team a while to adjust to playing with new team players today. Once we start to build trust and rapport this will improve.
A decrease in match fitness levels was apparent but this will improve very quickly girls!!! :)
We developed tight man to man marking in defence as a collective unit, delaying player running into attacking 1/3, forcing opposition to make errors/held ball. Once we've nailed collective man to man marking we can start to work on some zoning strategies.
Things to work on for next games:
- quicker reactions when we get a turnover - maybe start using verbal cues e.g. intercepting player shouts "react"/"turn"/"change"??
- stop opposition from zoning us by 'holding'/standing close to our opponent and then timing our move to drive away from them into space.
- stay ball side - don't run behind our players forcing high balls
- controlled change of pace of the game through timing, positioning and passing e.g. switching between flat, fast, first time balls in a smaller space (or on the run) to timed drives into a wider space
- confidence and controlled play
Things to remember for re-match with SAS:
- GK reads the game very well. GS needs to delay her run/move until the last second as GK hangs off then uses her speed and jump to intercept
- use all players when channelling the ball down the court. Keep the ball flowing, as fitness improves players will back up and offer more.
- when attacking make sure we are ball-side of our opponent, use flat passes.
